How to Paint a Mural or A Wall Picture Like Oikar Studio Does It

The Exact Pro Method We Use on Every Kolkata Wall to Paint a Mural or A Wall Picture

At Oikar Studio, we paint 15–20 murals every month – from New Town penthouses to Park Street cafes. This is the bullet-proof, monsoon-surviving method we follow on every single project (so you can try it yourself… or just call us at 7003228319 and skip the mess).

Planning (We Never Skip This)

  1. Client mood-board + site photos
  2. We create 3 free 3D mock-ups (you pick one)
  3. Final design locked → printed in actual size for reference

Wall Prep (90 % of success happens here)

  • Scrap loose paint
  • Crack filling with Birla White Cement + Putty
  • Two coats of anti-fungal primer (we use Berger Dampstop)
  • Sand to baby-skin smoothness (220 grit)

Grid & Projector Transfer (Zero mistakes)

  • Draw 1×1 ft grid on wall with laser level
  • Rent a ₹1200/day projector (we own 4)
  • Project design → trace with stabilo pencil (erases easily)

Base Coat Magic

  • Background in 2 thin coats of Berger Silk Luxury Emulsion
  • For concrete/golden texture: we mix quartz powder + primer for gritty base

3D Sculpting (This is where Oikar walls become alive)

  • Relief paste recipe: Wall putty + Fevicol SH + acrylic colour
  • Apply with palette knives in 3–8 mm thickness
  • Sculpt fish fins, leaves, leaves, or alpana motifs while wet
  • Let cure 24 hrs

Colour Blocking & Shading

  • Premium acrylics: Camel Artist or Winsor & Newton
  • 3–5 layers of glazing for depth
  • Shadows: Raw umber + ultramarine blue mix
  • Highlights: pure titanium white dry-brushed

Luxury Finishes (Our Secret Sauce)

  • Real 24k gold/silver leaf on selected areas
  • Metallic powders mixed in clear medium for drip effects
  • Glow powder layer for night-glow ceilings

Final Sealing (Kolkata Monsoon Armour)

  • 3 coats of Berger WeatherCoat All Guard clear exterior varnish
  • Washable, anti-fungal, zero yellowing
  • 10-year guarantee in writing
